5 Minutes with Callum Stenson

Join us for 5 minutes whilst we profile our agents around the country. Today, we hear from Callum Stenson, State Director, QLD.
  1. How did you get started in property?
I was working as a Foreign Exchange trader in London, got married to an Australian and emigrated to Brisbane. I had some family members in property so thought I would give it a go and see how it went. Must have done something right as I’m still here, 24 years later!

  2. What is happening in your market right now?
The industrial market has been remarkably resilient, and we have a lack of good quality stock which is driving pricing to well above pre-COVID levels.

  3. How has Covid affected your market? What are you/ your team doing to combat this?
After the initial lockdown and the uncertainty associated with that, the market has recovered well. As a team we are ensuring that we keep in constant contact with our clients and making sure that they are well informed. The use of our SA1 Property Technology platform has been vital in the sharing of this information.

  4. When do you think the market will bounce back?
The sales market has already bounced back. The leasing market although tough, is showing some green shoots with enquiry in the last 4-5 weeks doubling.

  5. What is one tip you would give investors/landlords right now?
Maintain a strong relationship with your tenants and ensure that you are across any of their issues. Most tenants do not look to move unless they have to. Don’t give them an additional reason to move by being unsympathetic to their needs.

  6. What is one tip you would give owners & tenants right now?
Don’t delay your decision making! Good quality stock both for lease and sale is diminishing and is not being replenished as quickly. Although it is a great time to be a tenant, delaying decisions could mean you miss out on your preferred option.

  7. Name one career highlight from the past 12-18 months & why.
The deal that stands out in the last 12 months was using the SA1 Platform to finalise an investment sale. By using the platform with an interstate buyer, we were able to demonstrate to him that the land that he was buying was the only 2ha parcel within the whole precinct. The platform allows us to better connect with interstate (and offshore) buyers like never before.

  8. Tell us about the most unique/ special property you have sold/ leased.
Although not in my core market, the on sale of the Colgate Palmolive property at Arundel on the Gold Coast, now known as the Gold Coast Logistics Hub, was one the harder transactions to complete but ended up being the highest ever value industrial land sale in the region.
