The Ins and Outs of Styling Your Space for Summer

How do you embrace the great outdoors and create the feeling of summer in your neglected old space without blowing the budget?

Think about the space

Outdoor living in Australia has become a way of life, and if your outdoor space could do with an overhaul, the experts suggest working towards creating ‘transitional space’, which means moving your living areas towards the areas of the house where the outside and inside meet. Rethinking your floor plan is not only a great way to bring summer into the home, but it also makes entertaining a breeze.

Seating is of the utmost importance when entertaining outdoors. Whether it’s modern outdoor lounges or a more traditional table setting, there are plenty of options available. For smaller spaces and smaller budgets, try creating your own modular arrangement with sturdy outdoor storage chests and cushions. Outdoor fabrics allow you to revamp your outdoor spaces just as you would your indoor ones.

A green thumb

A removal of weeds and any plants that are beyond the point of resuscitation can create a magnificent difference. Trim back overgrown bushes and throw any healthy clippings into glass jars and style with some low maintenance potted succulents. Lighting is also a great means of creating ambience should you entertain at night. Rather than harsh spotlights however, use gentle pathway lights, or alternatively affordable hanging lanterns and candles.

On the inside

Refresh your indoor soft furnishings with a splash of this season’s colours. The tired old family couch will bounce back to life with a few clean new cushions and a light summer throw. Replace big heavy curtains and winter rugs with lighter summer furnishings. Sheer curtains and rugs made with natural fibres like hessian, jute and hemp are a great choice.

Indoor flowers and plants are a great way to add a touch of summer, and with many easy-care options available, even the busiest household can keep them thriving.

Finally, give your Netflix subscription a rest over summer and rearrange your furniture to face away from the television. By turning your settings towards the windows you will constantly look outdoors allowing you to appreciate the feeling of summer from the comfort of the couch.
